ARE YOU HOLDING ON TO THE PAST? HAS IT BECOME PAINFUL?
I remember as a child walking to the top of this huge mountain with my Dad and our dog.
It was freezing, the wind lashed off my tiny beardless face, I was an overly tall lad so my shoes didn't quite fit and had cut and blistered my feet about 3 minutes into the journey.
We climbed and climbed and reached the peak, It was beautiful, I felt a huge sense of accomplishment. My legs felt like they might buckle but I was so proud. I wanted a souvenir so I grabbed any cool looking stone and rammed them in my pockets.
They made the journey down so much more difficult, they weighed me down! I lost balance and slipped and slid but I made it.
A man who worked at the park came over when I reached the bottom, and said “Sorry sir you can’t take these stones, park policy, can you please empty your pockets”
I went through all of this pain and effort! I didn’t want to let them go. Reluctantly I emptied my pockets.
“That is great mate, but you need to get rid of all of them”
I had more hidden deep in my bag, in my socks where no one would find them. Rats. I sadly pulled out every last one onto the ground.
I felt lighter, I moved easier. I always have the memory of my journey, I just no longer need to carry it with me.
